A Sad Day in my Journey ๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿ˜Ÿ๐Ÿ˜”

I broke my GS SD GMT! A heart-breaking lesson on how not to handle the date changing function on a travellers GMT watch.

In the process of changing the date, where you have to cycle the hour hand forward until you get to the correct date for the day, I guess I went thru the process too fast that it broke a gear tooth(teeth) on the jumping hour wheel I guess. I wanted to get to the right date fast so...!!! So now the hour hand does not align properly/normally with the minute hand in telling the time! Moreover, the gritty feeling of cycling thru the jumping hour hand is not there anymore like it did before. ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

I feel so stupid! I have been very careful with my watches up until this time. Always handling/wearing them as carefully as possible. Now as per the service center, the watch has to be sent back to Japan as GS has not endorsed repairs/service for SD movements outside of the country. A quote will be sent to me upon examination and the estimated turnaround time is about 3-6 months. โ˜น๏ธ

Sharing this sad experience so that the watchfam may not commit the same STUPID mistake I did. ๐Ÿ˜“๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ˜ซ Well, I just have to treat this as a lesson. Hopefully not a too expensive one. ๐Ÿซฃ

Iโ€™m sorry to hear that.

And thank you for sharing. Iโ€™ve seen many โ€œshouldnโ€™t doโ€ videos but never came across this. Iโ€™ll be careful with my GMT watch.

Up until this incident I have been very deliberate in setting the date on this particular watch. However, during this instance I was at the same time watching netflix so I probably did not realize it that I was cycling the crown too fast! I'm just so mad at myself! ๐Ÿ˜

ยท

Sorry dude! Oh man I should be patient myself, I tend to rush when setting the hour hand and date on GMTโ€™s โ€ฆ hopefully itโ€™s a quick and painless ($$$) fix

ยท

I feel your pain! I was late to experience my first Grand Seiko watches but fell quickly in love with the gorgeous and capable watches buying 3 high beat iterations, ready to add a spring drive but hesitated when my ad informed me that servicing for spring drives for watches purchased in Canada are shipped back to Japan! Your appreciated post is further caution. ๐Ÿ‘

Thanks man! Yup, be very careful when setting the date with the hour hand. I don't think the gear teeth are very tolerant to fast/sudden revolutions. ๐Ÿ˜ช

I feel the pain deep within ๐Ÿ˜ซ

I was regulating my watch when my tweezer slipped & hit the balance wheel. The movement just stopped right then & there. What made it so painful was the fact that it's my ONE & ONLY watch, i got no substitute to wear ๐Ÿ’€

Luckily i found a local watchmaker who replaced the balance wheel & brought my watch back to life ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

Hope your GS will get fixed & you can wear it again very soon! ๐Ÿป

ยท

Oh no, as owner of a GS Mt. Iwate GMT I can feel your pain ๐Ÿ˜” I really donโ€™t like to set the date on my GS GMT, especially if you have to go half a month through or even worse: back! It just feels wrong and too many clicksโ€ฆ Therefore, if my GMT runs out of power and waits back in the closet I wait for one month so I only have to make a few hour hand turns ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜‚

I don't think they are really that fragile specially if you give them the appropriate TLC. Just hope that when the time has come for servicing GS would have delegated this to authorized service centers internationally in another 3-5 years. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Well, that is one way of dealing with the issue! But I wouldn't want to wait a month to be able to wear the watch when I want to. ๐Ÿ˜‚ It was entirely my fault. I should have paid more attention and care in setting the date. Patience is a virtue. ๐Ÿ˜‰

True! The GS is so beautifully crafted that I am really cautious about it. Completely different than with my others.

I agree but all mechanical items have the potential to fail. I budget for my lifelong hobby, have no issues with paying my way but I am not an apologist for the long delays waiting for watches to return from service. Admittedly I favour watch brands that either service my watches quickly here in Canada or have a track record of fast service. The official service centres for Breitling and Omega are within walking distance of my downtown home so I tend to buy models from those brands.

Yup, they are truly amazing watches, aesthetics and tech-wise. Well, for now I would have to settle for my other pieces. I hope not for very long. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I understand. Our hobby is also sometimes (or most of the time) devoid of proper reasoning or logic. If you want a watch which speaks to you, you just have to have it. "Buy what you want" has always been the norm for most enthusiasts. ๐Ÿ˜„

How fast is fast? Iโ€™m go thru it pretty fast on my GMTโ€™s, none more than my old 16710. Thanks for the heads up, maybe Iโ€™ll slow down a bit.

I must have been going at it like winding a watch from a dead stop. Yeah, it should not be bad to take it easy. ๐Ÿ˜‰

ยท

That's a shame. Ihave never heard of that before. I go pretty fast as well. Guess I better slow down.

Yeah, patience has its benefits in this case. Thanks Manny! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Sorry bro, but thanks for sharing.

ยท

That's terrifying, I own couple mechanical automatic GMTs and I just blaze thru the hr hand to adjust that date, didn't realize this could damage the gear teeth in the mechanism ๐Ÿ˜ข

Yup, better exercise care and caution bro. Don't do what I just did to mine. Thanks Ed! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thanks Zep! GS also adjust both ways. But I didn't want to go counter-clockwise. Just seemed not normal unless you are only talking just a couple or so hours back. Yeah, my stupidity did me in! This was avoidable altogether. ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

That really blew my mind the first time I wound backward and the date changed backward. It's one of the reasons I like them. Say it's unwound and the day is ahead by a couple of days. Rather than having to go all the way around so many times....

Still, it does hurt. Hope they can get you taken care of at service.

ยท

Hold on a second, shouldn't a mechanism that is designed to be manipulated with your fingers be able to survive... manipulating it with your fingers? It's not like you took a power drill to the thing! I'm calling foul on seiko, or maybe the watch just had a problem that was waiting to manifest. It's unreasonable to ask people to set the date slowly, especially when there's no clear indication of how slow is slow enough.

Yeah, I really hope so. Praying that it should not be that expensive and a faster turnaround period. ๐Ÿ™

Yeah, I believe so too. Well, mine is an older model (2017) and all that cranking the hour wheel must have decreased the tolerance over time. Not sure, maybe the wheel may have been due for replacement anyways. Anyhow, it is best to exercise caution and care when changing the date on a gmt watch. Thanks Rob! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Nothing I can do but try to have it fixed. Sent it out to an authorized service center for shipment to Japan. Will be waiting for a quote after they have examined the watch. ๐Ÿ˜ข
