A question of just how waterproof

So, last week I decided to treat myself to a little bit of a nostalgic watch and headed out to buy a stainless steel Casio digital, with the intention of wearing for work. I had one years ago and did wear it but can't really remember how much I actually did with it. So, went to Argos and bought the watch for £19.99 and headed home, I got the manual out to set the watch and then started reading about the level of waterproof. The watch was only water resistant so hand washing is about the top level recommended, as a chef I work in a hot, quite steamy kitchen and been self employed and getting stuck in, also do a bit of dish washing. I haven't worn the watch for work been worried that I would ruin it! Last night watching a bit of you tube, a video came up of a similar water resistant Casio and it was put in a pressure vessel with water and taken down quite a few hundred feet with the watch still working 😮, in the comments, many people saying how they swim in there's, people surfing etc. Do I wear the watch to work and see how it goes,(bearing in mind if it goes wrong it's not that much money) and maybe pop it on my apron top if doing a lot of washing up, or do I go and get a G-Shock, more waterproof Casio, timex ironman or a waterproof sekonda! Help me out please watch crunch. 🤞

Wear the watch; it'll be fine. People are irrational about water resistance for the most part.

I'm pretty sure I did everything with the old Casio and it was fine. I think been a little bit more switched on about these things just got me thinking about it. Maybe a little to much.

People keep spreading decades-old myths about water resistance. You don't develop a reputation for quality by making products that are barely capable of what you promise. You over-design, over-engineer, over-build and over-deliver. All quality watch manufacturers do this. The margin of error is large. That Casio can go deeper than you and there's no water situation on dry land to worry about. 🙂

There are certain chemicals you don't want near your gaskets with any frequency, but that has little to do with the water resistance rating itself.

·

In my experience and to what I have heard from other people casio tends to underestimate the water resistance of they're own watches so it might last better than said, and they aren't too expensive so I don't think I'd worry too much, but they tend to be more tough than you think even if it's not a g-shock.

Thank you, this is good to hear and kind of backs up what I have seen. I think I'm going to go for it and if I have to do a lot of washing will just take the watch off. I've worn a few watches to work with but the Casio was probably the best, my wife bought me the sekonda one in the photo which was also good but the strap started to smell with it been cloth. I replaced that with a mk 1 pebble watch which was really good and then a slightly problematic nixon mission smart watch.

They deffinetly are a great watch for the money. I think the problem is that I do rather like the watch and was thinking of maybe wearing it out of work. Bit daft really ax I have others. They deffinetly are a good price so I'd be happy if it kept going for 6 months. I'd say it will go longer now.

It will be just fine…g shock watches are built for beatings , a lot of self-proclaimed watch enthusiasts here don’t understand water resistance.

G shocks really are tough! I'm sure I have read somewhere on here that a guy used to put his through a commercial dishwasher at the end of the night to clean it off 🤣💪

With some watch brands they fail their rating.i think yesterday someone posted their 1000m diving watch that failed in a swimming pool. Lol

With Casio it's the opposite. Most reliable watches on Earth. Go ahead and use it.

But also yes buy a g shock. They are super fun.

This one specifically has the softest strap.

Yesterday’s watch was a cheap made in China watch. It was more like a fake dive watch.

Exactly.

Seals and gaskets good = wr.

If they are old, cracked, etc = water ingress.

97% of us will never venture more than 3m.

Also funny to not the WR of dive computers...just sayin...👀🤏🏻😜

Yeah but isn't that most watches nowadays?

I mean even Seiko started making desk divers.

Cheap quality watches yes

Decent quality watches no

If it helps, I've taken a Casio F19W diving on occasion. No issues, even at about 140 feet of actual ocean. Just don't press the pushers underwater, of course.

I'd wager your Casio would be fine in a commercial kitchen setting. And if not, you're only out 20 quid...

Also food for thought,

I've swum, snorkeled, skindove, water boarded (behind the boat kind, not the other......👀😆😅😜), etc with everything from my Hand-wind Khaki Mechanical, to some Chinese stuff, to Japanese stuff, to microbrand stuff.

This includes a Hand-wind, acrylic, DIVE watch from HVD. Really cool actually, uses gaskets only like OG Mid-Century swiss. Called the HVD Spectre Diver.

Haven't had any issues. I never use pushers underwater, of the watch is seeing regular water I get the seals checked every once and awhile.

Price, "history", quality, etc have little to no effect.

It's basic physics. Full stop. Seals and gaskets good, watch is good.

Some might not like to admit it, but with modern tech and CNC/lathe machines, even the cheapest Ali brand has a better case than anything made from yesteryear.

Now maybe the seals and gaskets aren't checked, are faulty, etc, sure.

With more expensive stuff, your helping to offset the company's advertising and heritage money. YMMV.

That is on lovely watch! Interesting to get other people's views on this. By the sound of things I think it is going to be fine.

Thanks!

And I think you'll be fine.

As with wearing/using any type of tool stuff does happen, but Casio's from my experience, outperform in most metrics for a relatively cheap digital!

By the sound of things these watches seem to get taken everywhere. Stories of people surfing, diving swimming. Just hope it's ok with a bit of washing up. Will be good to have something on the wrist during the week l. And if it goes wrong it's not cost a fortune.

Try them on wrist if you can. I don't find the oaks that comfy.

Or try pro trek if you like big watches. That's my fave.

·

It'll be fine. Just search this site for #paddlingpool to see my comprehensive tests of any kind of watch you could be worried about. Long story short, they are all very water resistant.

I keep seeing the oaks when out shopping and think they look great. Been looking at the smaller ones as think the big (normal ones) might be a touch big for me.

I probably will never take my Tissot anywhere near water even though it's a diver 🤣. I'm gonna try the Casio and see how I get on, much more confident of it all now though.

There's a new small square one that looks cool. Sorry I forgot the model.
