One expensive watch or six affordable watches?

It wasn't that long ago, that I discovered my passion for watches. Of course, I immediately looked for like-minded people with whom I could exchange ideas and talk watches. A friend of mine, who is familiar with watches, told me a lot about expensive (+2000€) watches and how amazing they are. Sure, Longines, Tudor and Oris make outstanding watches, but for me it is still unimaginable to spend more than 500€ on a single watch, that looks extremely pretty and is made to a high standard, but ultimately only shows the time. 🫣 So I "held back" and over the last few months have built up a small watch collection that I'm very proud of. I like the different designs, shapes and colors and all for less than half the price of a single 'expensive' watch. This post contains no judgment! I find 'expensive' watches fascinating and impressive and am happy for everyone who owns such a beautiful timepiece. 👏😍

At the same time, I share the joy and fun of collecting watches with everyone who has inexpensive watches in the watch box or in the watch roll. That's also the reason why I think our community is so great. Every person is worth the same, regardless of the value of their watch collection.

Quality over quantity everytime for me.

This topic comes up A LOT & I'm not changing my mind 🤣🤣

One expensive for sure. If someone tells you otherwise they have never owned an expensive watch. I still love watches of all price points but after wearing an expensive watch as a daily it’s hard to go back. It’s like watching 4K movies with surround sound to watching vhs movies on a tube television or eating fresh pasta in Italy to eating a can of chef boy r de. Once the difference is felt it can not be unfelt.

"Quality remains long after the price is forgotten" - me

I think this changes depending on how experienced you are with watches. There's a lot about watches to learn, and a lot of it is very difficult to learn about without owning and wearing them. I think, for new people trying to figure out what they like, several, varied watches is a good exploration exercise to go through. After you feel like you know what you like and don't like, in theory and in practice, slowing down, saving up, and buying one or two more expensive representatives of what you like most about watches is a great way to go. Going all out for "the one" is awesome if you're right about what "the one" is for you, but it's a really expensive way to learn through error.

Get ONE completely pleasing, madly in love forever, expensive watch. You’ll kick yourself senseless later if you get a bunch of stuff you don’t adore just to have “things”. I feel strongly about this.

I’ve dwelt on this for a long, irritated time. It’s not funny. How many arsey watches have I bought, just to find myself yearning to trade them all for one truly wonderful watch? No, not a funny business.

·

I have cheap and higher end (topping out at about $10k). They all tell the time.

Get what floats your boat!

I don't think you realise the dangerous path you are choosing to go down here. Irrespective of your decision as to what would suit you best, I guarantee you'll be at the same crossroads within a relatively short period of time 😜

I was in the variety/quantity camp for a while and I'm moving towards the quality over quantity space now.

If I was to start a brand new collection now, I'd get 3 sub-$100 watches (beater, dress, GADA) and then start saving for the really quality stuff.

Wow - this is a great statement. The Sekonda surely has a lot of sentimental value. 😍

Yes and it's very nice too.

Quality over quantity for sure. One expensive watch, only if it is high quality, rather than six cheap watches even of decent quality. I see guys posting that they can only afford “cheap” watches and that maybe some day they can get a “good” one, but their collection consists of 20 watches that all cost 200-500 dollars each. Thats your one “good” one right there. Just my thoughts though, no hate on anyone for doing what they want or love!

I'm with you. There is no right or wrong way to collect watches. Me for example, I like the variety of my collection. I change watches multiple times a week and they put a smile on my face every single time.

I started collecting watches more than 10 years ago but knew very little technical things about watches. Over the years, I simply bought watches according to the styles and limited myself to collecting only very budget-friendly watches. By "budget-friendly", I mean roughly between C$100 to C$200.

I got up to 12 at one time and they are mostly quartz watches. Only then I started buying luxury watches. I think it is a good idea to start with inexpensive watches so you can get a little bit of everything you want to try. Only then I start switching to luxury brands and become more selective in each purchase decision. I won't start this hobby with my first watch a luxury watch.

Thanks a lot, this is a very good advice 🙏

Hmm probably a sentimental omega smp. Not counting sentimentality: bluesy; if not living in a world where the opinion of others doesn’t matter: citizen washi dial

But being asked to keep one watch is so different from 1 or 6 watches. I would easily rather keep 6 from my collection than any one of those in a heartbeat

I couldn't agree more 🤜🤛

Quality

I'm with you. Fortunately affordable doesn't mean bad quality 🤩👍

·
TimeOnMyHands

I admire your approach if that has been 100% successful.

I try to do the same but inevitably I have not had a perfect success rate.

I am definitely fallable and have fallen for sales, deals, FOMO, etc.

Probably the most common reason for moving a watch on is size (usually too large) but I think I have learned that particular lesson … at last!

I completely understand your point of view. Fortunately, I have been able to resist many sales in the past. And luckily (for my wallet) many Citizen watches are too big, so I was able to resist buying them too. Otherwise my collection would be at least twice as big.

·
watchy999

The point for me is to wear the watch and I also like some variety. So I will probably have a mix of normally priced watches and perhaps an expensive one. The price is not reason to buy a watch to me. All my watches are currently below 500 Euro but i suspect that will go up soon, but only if i csn Rr myself wearing it regularly.

I also like the diversity of my small collection. A luxury watch would not suit my personality or lifestyle.

😊 money. Simple answer.

You choose the best watch with the best brand, with the best quality, with the best design, with the best movement, with the best reputation, with the best street cred, with the best prestige, that you can comfortably afford with the money you have. Whether you want to admit it or not, that’s the only universal truth, applicable to everyone. Nobody, absolutely nobody buys a watch only because it’s cheaper, when they can comfortably afford a “better” (read deals for better shove) watch.

We all have different comfort points and that’s fine. Nobody is right or wrong. It’s where you are.

Simple.

Thank you my friend. To the point. 🎯

If someone likes luxury watches and can afford them, I appreciate it. If someone likes and collects “affordable” lower or mid-range watches, I think that’s totally fine too. That's why we're all here, because we like watches. All kinds of watches.

I’m in my watch purchasing twilight so I’d go for the one nice watch. I have 2-3 purchases left in me before I swing for the fences and get one to end the collection…

Which watches are on wishlist? 😇🤩

·
WatchandUnwindOffical

Yes this is true and I love watches of all price points however let’s loook at citizen though. Their most impressive, highly finished, and watches they are most proud of are what…. Their most expensive ones. Of course this is a direct correlation between cost and quality/performancr

This one for example.

Sapphire crystal

Full Titanium

Great finishing

Super nice dial

Day/Date complication

100m WR

I think it's a very good package for almost 300-350€

Yes but then I would say what are the differences between a 500 dollar citizen and the 10,000 dollar citizen watches. There are hard objective differences

I don't know much about the 10k Citizen. But I think it has a special movement inside and the finishing should be on another level. The Citizen watches I'm talking about have the accurate Eco-Drive movement or the basic but reliable miyota automatic movement.

This year I’m gonna pick up a Longines spirit. Most likely the titanium 42mm. I also want a ww2 “flieger” style watch and that would be a next year purchase. I’ve never had a pilots watch.

If I were going for the last watch today it would be the bronze/gold Omega Speedmaster chronoscope. But that could change at any moment lol

And also they do not have any rotating bezels. I’m trying to get a bit of balance in my little collection lol
