Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

My wife gifted me with a Citizen Chronograph about 12 years ago. I was so enamored with it that I immediately wanted another one. And so it began…

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

My parents gave me a silver digital Casio watch for Christmas at around 12 years old in 1983. I can’t remember the exact model but it had a mini calculator on it. I loved that thing.

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

Probably only interesting to me…I bought my first Dive watch about six months ago. Orient Kanno. Last month, my wife and I went on a cruise and I told her I wanted to do a beginners scuba diving excursion, which we have never even considered on the 10+ cruises we’ve done before. She asked “Why scuba diving?” I told her “because I didn’t buy this watch just to stare at it. I want to use it for it’s intended purpose.” She thought I was nuts to do an excursion just because of a watch I bought. Not only was the scuba diving the most exhilarating thing we’d ever done, but we also got some great underwater pics about 30 feet deep with me pointing at my Orient Kanno.

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

Please stay within your financial means. Like any hobby, it can become expensive if you’re not careful. Also, don’t get too caught up in what other people say you should like/buy/wear. Do YOU and wear what YOU like.

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

Lately I’ve been pretty heavy on a couple of microbrands. JACK MASON is located in Dallas, where I live. I’ve visited their studio and love what they’re producing. VAER has an intriguing field watch that I’m interested in.

Q: What is your grail watch and why?

At this point in time, I haven’t figured out what my grail watch is yet. I’ve seen quite a few timepieces that made me say “WOW” but I’ve yet to have that moment where I say to myself “I HAVE to have THAT watch.”
