Current trifecta of wrist enjoyment

A ‘70 Grand Seiko 4520-8000, 2018 Zenith Heritage 146 El Primero Timeless Edition, and a ‘65 Rolex Day-Date 1803 walk into a bar… From afar the vintagey vibes are undeniable, but yet they seem to be an odd little group.

Surprisingly these three have been the most enjoyable ones on my wrist lately. Perhaps it’s the light/silver dials or the general nostalgia that they provide while being distantly connected to their more modern counterparts. Rewinding a few months, I don’t think I’d have guessed that it would be these three, and I’ve been rotating through quite a number of watches here for the Crunch.

The GS is the slimmest and lightest of the bunch, coming in at 37mm x 9mm. The Day-Date in the middle and the Zenith being the porker, for good reason.

Bummer that they are 18, 19, and 20mm lug widths, respectively. If they could share straps it would certainly make my life easier.

It seems the older I get the lighter the watches get and the more golden hues win out. My younger self would probably grimace is disgust. All those steel bracelets just sitting in the dark. With another year around the sun coming up soon, who knows what it’ll look like a few months from now.

Anyhow, just a random post for today. I’m sure you guys all have watch(es) that you gravitate toward, and many have changed over the years. Here’s my current snapshot in time and would love to hear about yours.

Wow, all three are classy - but that Zenith really stands out to me.

Yeah, it's a special one for sure. It's hard to photograph it properly, so when it first launched in 2018 it didn't catch on all that well. Most digital pics seem to pick up a weird shade of green-grey to the sunburst dial. TGV also did a video on it with some of the worst production lighting I've ever seen. But good thing my SO took a chance on it anyway and gifted it to me a few years back. It's way better in person (as are the other two).

·

All spectacular timepieces. If I had these in my collection, I’d gravitate towards them too. Classic watches that doesn’t scream “look at me”. Love it!

Thanks, DH. Yeah they aren’t too blingy at all, even in gold. I know you’ve been wearing your BB58 a ton, but what fills out your trio of grab n go’s? Your Batman and one of the JLCs?

·

Soooo much goodness going on within that trio.

·

The watch that appeals to me the most is the Seiko. It's an extremely simple & beautiful looking watch, very elegant.

·

Those 3 are simply beautiful. A truly elegant trio which has you covered in every scenario possible (maybe apart from some white water rafting).

·

Great watches and a super nice image bro 👊😎

·

Cool trio. The Zenith appeals to me the most. Chronograph. Polished case. Smooth bezel. Boom!

·

That Zenith is sublime, great piece

·

I’m into the GS and the Zen Al the are the dogs bananas!…..

I’m lately drawn to quartz watches can’t get enough of em dunno what it is Al but every time I look in the box it’s Casio, sekonda etc…. I need help 🙏🏻

·

Yassss🔥

·

The Zenith may be the thickest of the three, but it looks fantastic! Great choice for a chronograph. 🥳

·

Love that gold 45GS case.

Interesting read Al. I very much like all three but I would choose the Rolex. Not because of the hype involved with the brand, purely because I think it's the nicest to look at.

Because you asked my four are shown.

The Seiko and the Nighthawk because they're my two favourites, just about! Neither need to be cosseted too much. The Spinnaker because I think it's a great looking watch. It's got a few minor dents and scratches and was cheap second hand so I'll wear it most places. The Steeldive because I sold an SKX one crazy day before they became popular. I just love the look of it and I'm too mean to buy the real thing at their current prices 🙂

Ask me in six months and it will likely be different 😂

Ian, thank you 🙏🏼 you’re the only one that has been willing to share their current favorites. Thats a solid four piece sports setup. I guess you can say that you really dig watches on bracelets and find them comfortable for you. I like that you’ve got dive, flight, race all knocked out with this foursome and a mix of movement types. I’m not gonna ask you which one is your absolute favorite but would imagine it might not be the easiest choice.

Thank you Al. My pleasure to respond to your little request.

I guess I do like bracelets don't I! It's an interesting point you make which I hadn't taken in strangely. I do have plenty of straps on watches but these are definitely my go to four and I've never considered a change to a strap.

You're so right about choosing a favourite of course. It would be between the 'Daytona' and Nighthawk. Perhaps just the Seiko. Only just 🙂

Take care and get yourself reincarnated to a life of something better than penance when you can. But not before you continue to entertain us with your posts for a bit longer. 👍🤝

·

That’s a great line up Al. I really agree with your statement about the younger self would grimace. Taste change, we mature and learn to appreciate things we never expected we would. Which is growth and acceptance of age I guess.

Most bracelets belong in the dark imho 😉✌🏻

·

They’re all outstanding, Al. I’ll take all of them 🙂🤝

·

All three are beautiful Al. While I love your Zenith, like you, I'm appreciating gold more as I get older. I've written about my distain for anything gold when I was younger. As I've aged, gracefully I might add, gold is more appealing to me. They don't call them the Golden Years for nothin'.

My first pick would be the GS followed by the Rolex. Love reading your posts Al!

Danilo, I think we need to find you one of the golden Omegas that would be a perfect weekend or evening watch for you. Would you like vintage or something more modern like a De Ville? It’s out there just waiting for you, my friend!

If it’s not raining too much then this could be a good traveling trio. Perhaps we meet in Spain instead of the UK next time and we can all have a watch riot and some iberico.

Bracelets are good for doing the dirty work, but when you want some punch or some class, you just gotta go with the straps. I also didn’t like straps until I became an old fart… wonder what we’ll be using in twenty more years? Velcro?

I’ll be wearing that Speedmaster Moonwatch Velcro on all everything once I cross the hilly threshold. But I definitely like yours better, Count.
