I'm based in Scotland, having moved here from Bristol in 2018. I have managed to rotate (one watch at a time) through Speedmasters, Aqua Terra, G Shocks, several casios, IWC Mark XVI, Hamiltons and others. This watch hobby is an illness, but one I'm hoping not to recover from. Currently wearing a Casio and taking stock. I'm in watch rehab. The best bit of advice is to get a watch for YOU. Don't listen to youtubers, just try watches on and discover what YOU like. Doesn't matter about the cost, or what's considered "best watch under £1000" by others. I'm narrowing my preference down to 36-38mm legible watches (pilot or field style), which are high quality, discreet and covered in scratches from a life well lived.
Photography, nature, ocd, It all kind of links together.... then covid came along, my citizen needed a service and I started down the really deep rabbit hole, researching watches, hundreds of youtube videos, Archie Luxury, bark and Jack, Idguy and others....and eventually getting an 1861 Speedmasters. Totally wrong watch for me, but what a start
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
I think it was a titanium Citizen my mum bought for me when I was still at school
Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
My 1960s Enicar was bought in an old little antique shop in Whitby... no interesting story, just a special holiday and a watch that opened my mind to vintage watches, to 35-36mm sized watches, and to the idea that you do NOT need to spend big money to be in the hobby and to enjoy watches. In fact that little enicar and my g shock and Smiths are my favourite most fun watches to wear
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
Try on many watches and then get what YOU like, not what people tell you to get. It needs to feel comfy, good looking to YOU and to feel right, for YOU.
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
I've always wanted one Rolex (op 36), and a gold vintage watch. Probably an Omega , or JLC or Universal Geneve. Something like that....apart from that, I like to try many brands and I'm open to pretty much anything.
Q: What is your grail watch and why?
Oyster Perpetual 36mm in silver... my grail watch changes ALL THE TIME. At the moment this watch in particular is one I'm saving for. Very slowly. And it'll hopefully be achievable some day. A beautiful elegant modern solid wearable and memorable watch
Update. No idea now. Something under £2000, 36mm size and special
