New SBGX261

These are the first impressions of my Grand Seiko SBGX261G, and some pictures I snapped last week.

I'm very happy of this catch: my first GS, first AD experience, and first "luxury" (the term is relative) watch. While you're reading this, I've put the watch in its box until November. I bought it as a gift to myself for my 60th birthday, and am still too young to don it.

First impressions

Initially I thought the dial was too big. In fact the crystal is less than 30mm wide. The negative space and clarity tricked me.

Image

I was all in the tech, precision movement, hand assembly and polishing when I chose this example. I didn't expect it to be this beautiful to glance and wear: a jet black dial with attention commanding hands and indices, in a slender case that follows the line of my 6.5" wrist like it was built for me.

What impressed me most is how it sinks in and wraps perfectly my wrist. I don't remember any watch fitting me like this.

A feast of metal and rainbows

It's difficult to describe and picture the colored reflections that the indices give out when the light hits them. I took some nice picture, but it's a shadow of the in person experience.

In the open, under sunlight, at least one index will be mirroring some color or displaying a rainbow. In the right condition, for example when the sun is low or close to led lights, you will see fireworks.

Bracelet

The bracelet is nice, with fitting end links that look like part of the case. Not jingly but well articulated and with space between the links that allows the skin to breathe. It's very light and I like that.

I found myself sniffing at the bracelet because it had a strong metal smell. I am that nerd, I know.

Maybe it's the equivalent of the new car smell, or maybe... It is possible to feel the Zaratsu. 🤩

Thank you very much. I got it early to avoid price hikes and to end the hunt. And it feels good to know it is sitting on its pillow in wait.

I couldn't have the restraint buying something and putting it away for later 😂

After a GS myself, but as you know not exactly cheap, but great value I think compared to many other watches above it.

Than you very much Matt 🤝. Everything went smooth, and I got more than I expected.

Well, it's still to be seen if I will succeed. 😁

In my case, it's been FOMO pushing me to buy early. Too many people were saying that this model could have been discontinued any moment... and price inflation too.

Thank you very much Markus 👍

What’s the diameter of the watch case? It looks great on you!

·
Tropical

Thank you Mike. It's 37mm wide, 10mm deep. Lug to lug is 44.5. The male end links protrude but curve down just right. Once on my wrist it doesn't move around.

Makes sense! I have the same wrist size as you but went the “poor man’s” version.

Also 37mm

Omg a fantastic watch and as I always say, a GS looks great in pics but MUCH nicer in person. Wear it in good health and congratulations!

It's very beautiful, the KS has a timeless design! I hope some day to get a vintage one. Not this year, though 😀

Very nice. Had the SBGR053 years ago. Same inky black dial, was mesmerized with that one. It was too thick (13mm) with the 37mm case, but your’s is just perfect with the 10mm thickness.

Congrats and enjoy 👍

Thank you sir. The case is flatter thanks to the 9F62 quartz movement. It's interesting that the SBGR053 in 2020 costed less than today's SBGX261, but today the used ones are sold at a price that is higher. I guess the automatics have been already moved to higher bracket.

A wise move, John.

Last year I considered two alternatives: a vintage King Seiko (like the one shown in @Max own youtube video) and various models from "The Citizen" line AQ series with washi paper dials, Eco Drive and perpetual calendar - some are close in price to the GS.

In the end it was the customer support that tipped the scale. For the moment "The Citizen" is not sold by Citizen in Italy, while GS sells through multiple ADs that provide customer support.

Great choice congrats! Start wearing it today. What’s the case size?

Ah, I thought so from the photo. Thanks for confirming. You can see my 40mm GS on my profile

What an absolute display of restraint, having such a GS on a drawer and leaving it there till November!

I’m sure you’ll love wearing it as much as I love wearing mine. So difficult to justify putting on any other watch of my collection every morning.

Thank you Daniel. I am human and fallible, quite far from absolute :). I stored it out of sight and reach because I would not resist if it was in my watch box. And to distract myself I ordered a Casio DW-290 "Mission Impossible", cheap and cheerful.
