Review: Tudor Ranger M79950-0002

I have developed a bit since I started collecting watches. Starting with the DW's, Fossils and Gants. Absolutely nothing wrong with those, oh well, the Daniel Wellington quartz is an overpriced crap watch.

Having bought and sold a bunch I realised that impulse buying wasn't what I wanted or could afford, for that matter. I decided to scale down my collection and sold off a few pieces I never wore. I was aiming for six watches and had five in my box. Having been on the lookout for a field watch for some time I decided that that style was going to be my next watch. The Boderry Voyager wasn't my style, clearly. Bough one during the hype and sold it off a month later.

I created list of watches I could imagine wearing and having in the collection. Started to look at the pre-owned market and after some pondering shortlisted the Longines Spirit 40 mm and the Tudor Ranger. Did some more thinking and decided on the Ranger. I couldn't find anything on the pre-owned market so I went for a new one.

Using the money from my sold watches along with a bonus I pulled the trigger and bought the Ranger from a local AD.

I have been wearing it almost daily since it arrived and I must say it's very enjoyable. Elegant, subtle, toolish looking.

Dial

The dial is matte black with 12,3,6 and 9 in arabic numerals and the rest in block markers. All in painted lume. It's a fairly simple dial yet with some really nice field-ish aesthetics. Easy to read in all ligh conditions thanks to the generous application of lume.

Hands

Basic polished hands with plenty of lume. The seconds hand has a red tip. Very stylish and fits perfect with the dial.

Case

Steel, of course! All brushed part from the edge of the bezel. The brushing is very fine, giving the appearance of an almost satin finish. At 39 mm it's bang on the right size for me. On a bracelet it goes easily with a suit and on a textile strap with a t-shirt and shorts.

Strap

The strap is made from rubber with the top in leather and white stitching. It has a folding clasp with a safety clasp, all in steel with a brushed finish and the Tudor brand name etched. It looks expensive and hasca really tight fit to the lugs. Hard, but not impossible to change strap without leaving tool marks. Not super comfortable though.

Movement

It's not in-house but manufactured exclusively for Tudor. Calibre MT5402 (COSC) with 70h power reserve. 28.800 vph.
