Word of Warning!

Bought this Addiesdive 1000m WR about a month ago after watching Jody's(Just One More Watch) positive review.

I loved the design, the inky black gloss dial, ceramic bezel, sapphire glass, the big size is perfect for me, nice bracelet, crap clasp. All in all, I was very pleased with it.

Currently on holiday, and this 1000m WR behemoth of a watch developed water ingress at the staggering depth of 0.6m (2ft).

Now, to be fair Jody couldn't test its WR integrity, but 2ft, really?

Be warned.

I'll be trying my Steeldive 1000m tomorrow. Wish me luck! Lol!

1000 m, screw-down crown... wow. I'd pursue warranty claims with every one of those bargain brands, so they either start making them properly, or stop claiming any water resistance.

·

I should, I know. In all honesty for £109, I can't be bothered. It'll go in a bowl of rice when I go home. If that fails, it's a decent paperweight I suppose. 😆

·

Argh, it's such a horrifying feeling to look at your watch and see massive water ingress, so sorry that happened to you! Thank you for sharing the experience, I've always been suspicious of the wr ratings on ali express brands, but there's so little data out there.

·

Shame coz it looks great.

😢

·

There you go, now that you have a basically ruined cheap watch, I vote for getting a watchmaking tool box and having some fun dismanteling the movement and trying to service it yourself. If you’re new to it, you’ll likely fail, but at least have some fun doing it 😀

Rice doesn't do much. Other than maybe getting bits of rice into the watch. I would unscrew it to let it dry in air in a clean area. As soon as possible to reduce the damage. I don't think it would ever dry when closed.

·

Maybe this is not what happened but the crown looks like is unscrewed in the photo. Was that photo taken after the incident and was the watch’s crown untouched?

·

From this picture I can see that your crown is not screwed down. That’s how the water got in there. That’s your fault, not Jody or the watch company.

·

I assumed he unscrewed the crown AFTER he noticed the water in there.

It’s pretty easy to unscrew the back of those and pop out the movement. Getting the stem out is the hardest part. But about 5 mins on YouTube will show you how to do it. Even I can do it, that’s saying something. Haha.

·

That’s annoying! Not a bad looking watch either.

Listen to what CasioBroccoli said.

I've heard that putting a wet phone in rice only makes it worse and that it's better to put it in a bag of those silica gel packets you get with various purchases, and I imagine the same can be applied for a watch.

Open it up!

Anyway, yikes, I wonder on what basis they claimed the 1000 m... Probably on the basis that a large number looks nice 😂

·

Yes, I would open the case whenever you get the chance, and keep it in a warm and dry environment. Also check the seals (case/crown) while you are at it. Keep an eye on the dial side to see if it vents sufficiently.

I also lost a watch at a similar depth.

Either way, it's a reminder that the number on the dial doesn't determine the WR, in contrast to a pressure test.

·

That sucks. But it's very easily fixed.

Due to the size and how long the hockey puck styles seem to sit on eBay, it might've been a REALLY old/dry gasket.

Or no gasket at all.

QC from most Ali brands is suspect at best.

I have personally seen a Navy EOD tech's brand new Pelagos 39 do the same thing in a rainy Florida training environment. Crown was screwed in. Water exposure was around 6 inches.

Before the cheap vs luxury brands bashing occurs, let's not forget any watch is made up of possibly hundreds of small pieces, assembled by humans.

·

Gee. A cheap Chinese ripoff watch that didn't perform. Who would have ever thought that could happen?

·

I never trust the water rating on any watch less than $300.00.

·

When I always get a new watch I always check the case back to be sure it is screwed in tight. I also double-checked my crown before I go swimming. I have the tuna homage from Addie's dive. I swim with it all the time. Never had a problem. They are a good company to deal with, especially if you buy directly from them. See if you can't get it replaced.

Yes, I will, I did buy direct. I'm on holiday at the moment so it'll have wait until I get back home. I'm sure they'll sort it.

·

No doubt. They are a very reputable company.

I’ve had an Amphibia. I would 100% trust a Vostok for aquatic activities.

Having said that I don’t really understand the appeal for going into the water with a mechanical watch. There’s a more than decent chance of badly scratching it on the edges of a pool or on rocks when snorkling and it needs a thorough wash after being immersed in seawater.

I’ve tried it with 2 different divers and just found the worry isn’t worth it so I personnaly leave my watch behind now.

I swim in pools and oceans with every type of diver I own, including my two-tone Bluesy, my Omega Seamaster, Oris Diver, BlackBay, etc., plus all various types of quality microbrands.

My nice dress watches are a different thing, but I don't mind dings or dents or nicks on any diver or field or pilot I own. But that's just me, I know some watch owners like their pieces to remain pristine.

·

Wore my 100m Addiesdive in the pool, just to see, no problems so far.

·
Stjarnadm

Correct, I did. I am stupid, but not that stupid. 😁

Hahaha. That pretty much sums me up as well. Hope all turns out well for you.

Personally I wear a watch when I’m in the ocean paddle boarding or doing water sports since I can’t have my phone in my pocket

·

Addies are actually OK with defects, get in touch I'm pretty sure they'll replace it. Mine is fine, sat at the bottom of my pond, 5ft, for 2 weeks. Accidentally opened clasp when doing maintenance and it fell off, left it there until next water change.

·

Would not of happened to a Seiko. 🤣

Fair enough. Whatever floats your paddle board 😀

·

I assume you went into the pool with the screw down crown. Anyway, I prefer to swim with my good old cheap chinese watches, because if something like that happen to one of my more expensive watches would be paintfull. Maybe that problem can be fixed.

·

This isn’t a cheap watch problem and then again maybe it is but a 30 dollar timex will do better than 2 ft.

Totally right. Although this is a cheap watch, and I'm pretty certain 1000m WR claim is bull. I didn't expect it to fail so spectacularly. I want to send it back, but the retired engineer in me wants to take it apart to find why it failed.

Do it figure it out make it better

Good news! The Steeldive 1000m WR passed the pool test with flying colours. I entered the pool this morning with fear and trepidation. My WIPA (Water Ingress Pool Anxiety) levels were off the scale. I needn't have worried though, as the watch passed the stupendously challenging 0.6m (2ft) WR test with aplomb.

Well done Steeldive! 👏
