Seiko springdrive?

Hi Crunchers,

Been reading up on the Grand Seiko spring drive movements. is it me or IS this the best invention since bottled beer?

It seems to me that the spring drive movements don't get the appreciation they deserve.

What are your thoughts? And what's holding you back owning one?

That second quuestion is easy to answer...LOL:)

They are kind of pricey - if that’s what you’re saying 💰

·

There is and never will be a better invention than beer… and springdrive is great just prefer it in a credor than a gs. But honestly you can’t go wrong 😁

·

Spring drive is fantastic! I was close to deciding on spring drive but I decided to go for high accuracy quartz instead. Maybe in a few years down the line..

·

No it’s not you at all. This really is the best invention since cold bottled beer.

Love GS.

·

GS is simply put..Class with Engineering Innovation 💡

·

The problem with Grand Seiko is that whenever they make a spring drive watch, they always include a feature called deal breaker.

The irony of a quartz regulator enabling the unequivocally most analog display of time passing is impossible to pass up once you sufficiently nerd out on it. To steal Oris' tagline, this is high mech in a way they could only dream of. Now combine the stellar internals with the most flawless finishing in the industry, and you have the best spectacle a watchmaker's loupe can provide.

I bought a Shunbun. There are lots of beautiful Hi Beats, but as I told my AD, if I am going to buy a GS it has to have a spring drive. For me, GS is a perfect blend of engineering, design, and fine craftsmanship. Expensive foe me, absolutely. But a grail watch. And I feel that it has great value for the price. Now that I have enjoyed GS quality I would add a quartz movement if I saw one I loved.

I’d say canned beer is the best thing since bottled bottled beer 😉For real though, Spring Drive is my favorite modern movement. You get accuracy that’s on par with all but the most accurate of quartz movements but with the smooth sweep of the seconds hand. Rarely is something truly the best of the both worlds but I do feel that SD is the best of mechanical and quartz all in one. My SD is more accurate than every quartz watch I’ve ever owned with the exception of a few GS high accuracy quartz I’ve had and even then the high accuracy quartz is only better by a few seconds a year, which is negligible. My White Birch with SD is running at +18 seconds a year.

My #grandseiko wishlist is the Shunbun, and yes it is quite an innovation the sprig drive. Awesome watches from all angles :)

You made the right choice! GS doesn’t really have any issues with Spring Drive yet their current hi-beat movements struggle to achieve their stated accuracy.

I own 2. My only concern with it is the hassle of servicing, having to send the watxh to japan and not knowing how long i'd get it back. I'll cross that bridge when i get there.

·

I think all of their movements are great, they even decorate their quartz movements, but spring drive is where it's at.

Owned one, sold it. For me, felt the movement although important is just one part of the entire product offering. In short, loved the spring drive and love the dial but quite frankly I did not get as much pleasure from the overall package when compared side by side with other options (I got or I could get) for the same price. GS really need to work on their bracelet as well as case shape / design before I will put serious money into it again

Price only …

I'd love to own a Spring Drive but I also like smaller watches. If they ever make a Spring Drive watch with a 36mm case I'll be all over it.

Yeah i noticed that. Is that because of the size of the movement, or do they just love big watches? What is the smallest spring drive watch GS makes? I have seen some 40mm's but not smaller i think.

Nothing is holding me back, here's mine

I think spring drive is about the best possible mix of mechanical engineering with quartz accuracy. Grand Seiko did a great job coming up with it. IMO

It's the size of the 9R spring drive movements, smallest cases that fit are their 38.5 manual wind references

38,5 mm is a good size in my book. A lot of them are 41mm and up.

I think most are actually in the 40mm range, with many bulkier sports model cases being 41mm and above but that's just due to watch design vs the movement itself

I own a spring drive watch and I love it!

Amazing tech, big fan of it and just picked one up and it's pretty great. Entry price is steep and goes up from there, but you can get discounts and buy used, in which cases they offer a lot in terms of GS being a vertically integrated firm with all inhouse processes within Japan, fit & finish, and movement tech.

Can you get a similar sweep with a Bulova Precionist 262hz movements in a JetStar or the new Grand Seville? Yes. But the tech is much different, and so the level of watch.

After a lot of words, check out the options in person and see what is right for you.

PS- Explore GS cases in wrist - they vary a lot and can impact price in terms of case and movement combos - not to mention dial types.

·

Spring Drive is awesome! That’s why I own a GS with a SD movement.

·

them having a really limited catalog for women.

It can't beat a draught one, though. 😀

·

I have one and it’s smth you have to experience!!! Spring drive is always , always a good idea

They have some 38 which I've tried on but they wear a little big because of the case design and lugs. 😕 I think in general Seiko (or their market in Japan) prefers bigger watches.

·

I’ve got one, and I love it for the technical innovation and the beautiful finishing.
