I think quartz watches are ... meh

Hi Crunchers.

Hot take. I think quartz are a bit ... meh. So there, i said it. I don't know why exactly, but i have a hard time loving even the most beautiful and accurate quartz watches out there: Grand Seiko's. Recently i read about a Citizen caliber 0100 with a one second a year accuracy. One second, a year!

But somehow the thought of replacing a battery is enough for me not to like quartz.

But here is the exception. I like solar powered quartz watches. I like rugged watches like the tough solar G-shocks but i like also watches on the other end of the spectrum: Cartier Solar beats. The idea to never have to replace the battery put's the watch in a whole new perspective.

I know, i know, not rational. But this hobby was never about ratio. Obviously.

Anybody else have nonrational thoughts about watches that you feel strongly about?

Lukewarm take but okay 😅

Haha you’re probably right. Would be hotter if I thought only quartz watches are the only watches worth considering.

Anything flashy or digital is a big turn off for me. Textured dials? Nope. Spring drive? Nope. Haute horology? Nope . Date windows? Nope..

I could go on 🙄🤣

Im a quartz fan,but I do appreciate mechanical watches. But I do like the almost set and forget aspect of quartz.

I have a combo mechanical/quartz collection. If you like solar…highly reco the Tag Solargraph…have had the titanium version for one year and love it

You're probably right. Quartz need batteries every so many years. Mechanical watches need servicing every so many years. On average, do you reckon, you need more batteries (quartz) then services (mechanical)?

I got a couple 😂.

  1. I don’t mind quartz, love the technology but hate to see the ticking sweep. I would rather have a smooth one.

  2. I don’t like hearing a movement ex:rotor from 7750. Some people say it tells you it is alive, in my head it feels really fragile which technically it is but you get the point.

  3. I don’t like the bulk and look of regular natos. Elastic ones and one loop are so much better!

You still need to replace the battery on solar.

Citizen's "no battery" marketing is total horse shit.

It's a rechargeable battery or on some models it's a capacitor that again needs replacing.

You just replace them less often. 3-10 years vs 10-20 years (really depends on model and usage).

Regular quartz is cheaper to buy and cheaper over time too. Approx $1 battery vs $20 battery.

But on mechanicals you need to replace and oil a lot more parts and it costs way more money and time and it's less convenient. And far less accurate. And far less shock resistant so dropping it could easily be an expensive repair.

Almost forgot. I don't like leather straps. Don't like rubber straps, and i certainly don't like nato straps. Hate them. I like the look, sometimes i even LOVE the look, but not how they feel on my wrist. Even dress watches all should have a Steel, gold, platinum etc option. If the watch does not have a OEM steel strap, i buy a third party one. If i cannot find a third party bracelet that suits the watch, i don't buy the watch.

One exception: i have a plastic 'oyster style' bracelet on my G-shock. But that is likely going to be my only exception.

Mechanical usually needs servicing every 5-10 years depending on usage. Many people go longer but then it's way more work for the watchmaker when they do do it. There's a pro on YouTube who talks about this stuff but I forgot his name..

Old. I'm quite old. 🤣👍🏼👍🏼

I've actually come to realise that I quite like the tick of a quartz.....there I said it 😬😎

I like both equally for different reasons. Quartz are so precise and convenient just to grab and go. It's usually thinner and lighter. Perfect summer watches. Low maintenance. It's fun to have options.
