Who's afraid of monsters?

My, I bet you monsters lead interesting lives. ~ Bugs Bunny Considering adding a splash of orange to the watch box to expand my color palette, so to speak, and would appreciate any thoughts/hands on experience/feedback y'all may have on these three options. And if there are any decent options I'm overlooking.

I have a Steeldive SD1984. The Heimdallr has more admirers but also costs more. I'm very happy with the Steeldive!

devil diver

·

I love the Seikos but the Heimdallr is way better imo. However another orange option is the Citizen BN0169

·

I'm slightly biased but go for the guys that invented Orange.

Personally I think that the gen 2 monster is just perfection…

If you want a Monster, it's because the Seiko Monster has caught your imagination, so buy the real thing. Anything else is just pretending to be one which is ultimately pointless.

·

I'd pick the Islander monster and look around for an aftermarket dial with the pointy markers.

·

The OG orange monster is nice, but the 7S26 is a bit lacking when compared to the price you would have to pay, and while the gen 2 dial is more monster-esque, I prefer the gen 3 dial

That’s a wise idea

If buying fake (sorry, I mean homage) doesn't bother you, then the Islander/Heimdallr options totally make sense.

However, for the real deal, the gen 2 Seiko has a better movement, cooler knurled crown and proper monster's teeth.

·

For something in this price range, I really see no reason for anyone to go with an homage over the original Seiko.

But between the latter two, I'd go with Islander. Mark knows what he is doing, especially with Seiko homages. I'd never buy a Heimdallr ever since they revealed to the community that they can't even be trusted to get a simple titanium case right.

·

Considering the Islander is 300$ and the original Gen 2s (SRP309) often go for around 500$ on eBay, I see no reason to buy an homage. You‘ll be happier with the real thing. However, there still remains the issue of making sure you don‘t buy a mod on eBay.

Or buy a black dial gen 2 (SRP307) for under 300$ on EBay and swap in an orange dial. It‘ll probably still feel more original than the homages.

·

All great options but for me Bulova Devil Diver is the most outrageous shade!

I agree with others that the Devil Diver is the more outstanding colour in comparison. If you are set on buying a monster I’d personally steer clear from the fakes. Been there, tried it, that did not resonate with me. I’m aiming for original design these days.

·

I would go with the Seiko over the homage

George could have a point there. I won't buy a chunky diver in stainless anymore. I own one and there are people that want a lot of weight but once you own a titanium you don't go back.

Nothing wrong with a good homage watch!

You're right. I wish I could get over my aversion to them. 😜

I’m leaning towards the Islander. I had a Heimdallr Capt Willard a few years ago. Overall not bad, but the bezel may have well been fixed cuz it was practically unusable. Gave it to a nephew.

For me the 7S26 is the biggest negative for the OG Monster. Seiko movement accuracy is a crap shoot. Of the five 7S26s I’ve owned, two kept decent time, three not so much. Meanwhile, the NH35/36 movements I’ve owned have all been good timekeepers.

Almost 20yrs now and this monster still gets a 2nd take from me atleast once a month!

That is nice looking. I already have the BN0150. Great watch!

I suppose I could replace the 0150 for the 0169 though 🤔

I’ve only ever seen one Monster in the wild, an Orange. They do stand out!

Ya just gotta find the right one! As with original design watches, they can be hit or miss. Some are keepers, some ain’t. They were my entry point into watch collecting. Don’t buy them that often any more, but still have a few, and not averse to adding more!

I had the BN0151 a few years back. But I just saw this a couple weeks ago and fell in love with it. Add a double dome sapphire and jubilee bracelet from LIW and its a whole new level!

I have the orange Islander Monster and really like it. I’m not sure of the Seiko’s have sapphire crystals or not and that was one of the things Marc was doing that was an upgrade compared to some other older Seiko’s. I tho l it just depends on if you want the original brand vs possibly better specs.
