9 Lessons I learned the hard way

Instead of another review, I went a bit meta and thought "what's my best advice for collectors". This is what I came up with. Which point do you resonate with? What did I miss?

Pow pow you got it 😁

·

@Max I'd be interested to know how you (and your team) made such a reliable and well made app (watchcrunch). apps like bereal which are also newer are huge but have so many bugs, and even instagram has had many bugs and issues for so long! thanks for the great app!

·

Good one @Max 👏🏼👏🏼

Great video; some humble advice too. Can’t get caught up in the hype, I totally agree….the Tudor Pelagos I tried it on and was like “eh” didn’t like how the indices overpowered the dial.

The PRX looks great, but the fact that everyone seems to have one and wears one….makes it less enticing for me.

Changing straps is cool, but I’ve never gotten much into that. I did with my Orient

And really like the change, but at times, I go back to the all black gun metal bracelet.

This video wasn’t really missing anything because it was your opinion and that’s that; always enjoy your content 🍻

Also, I’ve returned about 14 watches when purchased because they were really underwhelming when in person such like:

I’ve also sold off about 27 or so watches on EBay…..but honestly, I don’t miss any of them. For me I enjoyed them at the time and now they are off somewhere else and I get to re-invest in new pieces……for me watch collecting will be about the journey more than the acquisition.

But cool video, looking forward to more 🍻

Yes, that sinking feeling when you open the box and the watch just isn't up to expectation 😞

·

Very good video! 👍🏻

Great and very practical advice here, nicely done @Max and team!

Precisely! Or when you’re triaging an intake and realize it’s going to be a couple hours…..😂🤣I’ve had those days….

I’m watching this now! Downloading the app and joining in the WC fam, recently led me to finally ditching my Apple Watch and buying my Tissot PRX. Now I’m gonna have to share the story on the watch I bought while stationed in Germany. *Hint it wasn’t a Tissot, Rado, Tudor or even a Swatch 🤦🏽‍♂️

·

Nice work @Max. Speaking of meetups, heading to Chicago for Windup? If so will there be a WC meetup? Perhaps a joint venture with @oak_and_oscar?

100% living the “change the strap” life right now. Always liked my AT but didn’t wear it that often because of the strap that came with it. It was fine, but not super versatile and I didn’t love the color Omega chose. But now, on the Oak and Oscar Canvas strap…. I can’t stop wearing it.

#4 Make watches a social hobby

Was at a coffee shop in Palo Alto the other day. Gal approached me and said, "Hey, is that a Grand Seiko?"

Image

She said that her dad was really into watches and could she ask my advice on what to get him for Father's Day. Sat together geeking out about watches for nearly an hour!

Turns out that she's from Belarus, her student visa is expiring soon, and just needs someone to help her unlock some funds from her family's trust. She even promised to pay me back with 200% interest!

So, I sold off my collection of GS, to help her out.

She said she even found me to be incredibly attractive. All because, according to her, "only true watch connoisseurs appreciate GS."

This is her...

Image

I know what you're thinking! "Hey, wait a minute! She's on Watch Crunch!!! She recently started following me, and reached out to me via DM saying, "I think you're very interesting. You seem very knowledgeable about watches. I would like to get to know you." For some incomprehensible reason, the Watch Crunch mods banned her! Maybe like @Aurelian, she made one snarky comment too many.

Anyway, friends, I am here to tell you that if you get approached by an incredibly beautiful young woman in your DMs on Watch Crunch, sometimes, it's a real person, who just needs several tens of thousands of dollars to stay in the country, and like me, you too can be a white knight if you sell off your luxury watch collection to lend her the money.

I'm expecting her to reach out any minute now via DM to pay me back and maybe we can go out to dinner!

Yes, making watches a social hobby is the best idea of all!

All true and on point.

Max

I have the same one!

Except yours has a dope leather black weave bund strap!😉

·

I think you might have missed the biggest mistake which is rushing to buying as many watches as possible when you start the watch journey. When I started my journey, I brought like 6 watches in the first year and 3 where dive watches that I would now consider way too big for my wrist. All were a waste of money. I hadn’t developed my preferences and just brought what others said was cool. I have since reset the collection, try to enjoy a new watch before looking to buy another while making sure any new purchase serve a purpose in my collection.

I’ve watched all your videos on YT in the last 6 months. I love your perspective and delivery of content. Camera work and editing is superb!

Also, as a fellow Asian doctor 👨‍⚕️our wrists are a similar size, this way I can get a sneak peek of how watches might look before buying. 😆

Thanks for creating amazing content. Keep up the good work.
