NWA - Vintage Bulova Accutron

Well, new to me! A 1975 Bulova Accutron - my dad has one of these (from new) and I was always fascinated by the technology behind it. It’s humming away beautifully and the smooth sweep of the second hand is 👌🏻

Very funky watch! Congrats 🍻

·

Awesome! This #bulova is one of the greatest watches. That's a fact.

·

Mind blowing 😎

·

Thank you, I’m chuffed with it

·

That's awesome! I ordinarily don't like skeleton watches, I find them very hard to read, but that is so cool. Very Jetson's futuristic. Congrats!

Thanks - the space view has quite a history on that point. It was never intended to be sold as a skeleton, they were only made as display pieces so ADs could show the accutron’s tuning fork movement to clients - but everyone wanted the skeleton version and Bulova quickly cottoned on and put them into production.

·

Very cool. The new Spaceview also has an innovative technology with the electrostatic movement, but pricey!

·

Awesome!!! I need to look up how this movement works!

The quick version: a battery sends charge to coils through a simple circuit (a transistor, a capacitor and a resistor) which vibrates a tuning fork 360 times a second (in Fsharp).

The tuning form connects to an arm that steps a microscopic ratchet wheel with 360 teeth which connects to a fairly normal drive train.

This gives you a totally smooth second hand sweep

Holy cow! Thank you for that run-down!!

You’re welcome ☺️ Accutron predates quartz and is the second electronic watch ever designed - and is the reason that quartz crystals are shaped like tuning forks.

Can't we have a footage of it's glory?
