Which watch do you dislike?

When I bought my first house it seemed every loan officer pumping out sketchy adjustable APR mortgages had one. These watches were also popular with your club promoter, or concierge type. I swore they were bought in bulk and handed out as a performance incentive. I didn’t know anything about Movado except it seemed unpractical for telling time accurately. Which watch out there do you dislike?

I really don’t like the really expensive “hype” watches. Personally, watches like the AP Royal Oak and Patek Nautilus just look ugly and gaudy to me. Plus, they scream “tasteless new money “ to me.

·

I bought a Movado about 25 years ago, long before I knew about watches. Yeah, they were popular back then. Like you said, because of the style they aren’t any good for precise timekeeping. It only worked for a few years, and a battery change didn’t bring it back to life. So, I’d never recommend the brand.

Gaudy iced out watches...can't hang lol!

Homages

·

Fashion watches for the uninformed who really don't need to care what time it is.

·

Cartier Santos. Just not for me and I could never picture myself wearing one. I personally do not like Roman numerals on a dial.

·

Movado has one of the richest histories and best examples of fine watchmaking of the 20th century. Modern movado, however...

@fwatch nailed it. All the totally pave diamond covered stuff looks silly. I work in a very fancy restaurant and Friday night we had to guys in there on separate tables. One had what looked like a Datejust just covered all over, bracelet, dial, I wouldn’t be surprised if the hands were baguette diamonds. The second dude had a Richard Mille just covered. Dial and full case were covered in diamonds. They both just looked silly, like kids’ dress up stuff.

The dude with the Datejust was hella weird too. Just saying.

·

The Yachtmaster and Skydweller. I think they’re ugly without being charming. Not a fan of the Planet Ocean either. All good watches but not my cup of tea.

Like they say, "you do you"....lol!

I like my Movado dress watch...super clean and classic poking from under my suit cuff. However I don't have to dress like that very often so gets little wear. It certainly doesn't jive with my Carhartt and steel toe boots when onsite and a shipyard haha

To the subprime loan officers who pretty much caused the 2008 market crash:

Not a particular watch as such, but I just don’t like dress watches. I find them bland and boring no matter who makes them.

I know many will disagree but it’s just my personal preference

Homages

I don’t mind homages too much, but it gets tiresome when people try to say that they’re better than the original for X or Y reason 😂

Yesssss! I was so so with homage at first, until their owners try to justify that it is better value than the original etc etc etc.

·

Plastic.

·

Jewel encrusted watches. They are tasteless. Gads!

I generally find so-called homages to be copies, plain and simple.

Nice to come across someone who isn’t afraid to agree with this opinion. I get very confused by the motivations of people who buy those things. Why not wait and get the real thing? And why does such a majority seem to think that Rolex is the brand to aspire to the most?

It’s a mystery to me.

100%, I think homage buyer put paper specifications above all else. Design, expression and character are the biggest factor for me, and a copy just doesn’t offer that - I’ve had a few homages, and they just lack character and soul, and I’ve never connected with any despite being great on paper. No shade on people who like them, but they’re just not for me! 💯

I have felt this way generally but yesterday I saw a beautiful woman at the jewelry store with a Rolex with a diamond encrusted bezel and I got it. It was cool.

·

I don't know about all of this hate on Movado. I bought this one over 20 years ago and it sat in a drawer for 20 of them. I found it and had it serviced and it's perfect

I had some back in the day.. sold them all.

There are brands that I believe all enthusiasts then to dislike, movado, invicta, fashion and mall watches, but the real question is which luxury brands do you dislike? For me is Tudor and Grand Seiko. I just don't see the allure of these watches. Seiko makes great watches and Turdor is a water down version of Rolex.

Please I am of the opinion that you wear what you like, only you look at your watch. I think I'll wear a Pagani tomorrow.

·

Invicta, I understand most of them are a good deal but when I see them on a wrist they tend to look tacky.
