Polarizing Rolex opinions.

I recently saw a post on WC in regards to Rolex. I have my own opinions and in full transparency do not own a Rolex, but am very familiar via family members who own examples (including ref. 16570 Explorer II). I don’t really aspire to own a Rolex but if I did it would absolutely be a ref. 16570 polar dial with drilled lugs. The drilled lug version of the ref. 16570 appeals to my love of tool watches.

In my mind, it's a tool watch in the same way a fancy, top trim pick-up truck is a work truck. It will perform as a work truck. However, there's a whole lot of money put into things that don't matter or are even slightly counterproductive for work trucks, and many reasons why people would buy and own that truck with zero intention of using it for work. Rolex's sports watches are tool watches, but they're also a lot of other things that can kind of get in the way of being a tool watch too, like shiny and expensive.

For me, every watch has pros and cons, but Rolex is the brand that seems to be "above average" in pretty much every aspect. The fit and finish of the watch, the accuracy, the "feel" of the clasp, the attention to detail, Rolex seems to nail it every time. The cons is that it can get abit too "clinical" and lack abit of character as well. They can absolutely still be used as tool watches but they have a far more up market feel to them compared to the 5 digit references.

So this is going to stir up a ruckus, but a lot of the polarizing opinions are from people who do not own a Rolex or have never actually stepped foot in a Rolex AD.

While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, a lot of people are basing their opinions on what they see/read online, without actually talking to an SA or holding one of their watches.

That is definitely an element to it.

There will always be people who say nasty things about the leader in any industry. Are those people worth being concerned about? Rolex’ revenues dwarf their competitors so there are plenty of people who think they are worth it. They are not made for those who don’t.

Are you asking for my polarizing Rolex opinion? 😂

I really like Rolex. I'm very content in my experience. I enjoy them and several other quality brands. I ignore all the BS and recognize them for what they are. They aren't the very best but you could do a hell of a lot worse.
