Vintage Grail!

I knew when I actively started collecting watches would want a vintage watch with history. When I first saw the B-Uhr I knew it would be my vintage grail. Today I added a Laco B-Uhr type B to my collection. For those that are not fimiliar; they were worn by Navigators on German bombers during WWII. They are instrument watches for navigation. They are BIG!55mm.. And has a large crown so it can be turned with gloves on. The watch was worn over the flight suit. There are two different types. A and B. A does not have the inner hour ring and has a dot on each side of the triangle at 12 o’clock. I have the original strap, but it needs some leather work done. The dial does have radium on it. So I won’t be opening the watch any time soon.

Amazing piece

·

A museum piece.

·

Nice! 55mm is a bit big for my wrist, and I’m not a vintage collector. But wanted a Flieger from an original manufacturer so went with the Stowa Baumuster B in 40mm.

I don’t hate the gigantic size since there’s a functional reason for it. Great looking watch.

·

Certainly an interesting, historical piece. Just don't lead off in the lunch room with, 'The Nazi's commissioned these watches...' when introducing it to a colleague.

Probably won't go well!

·

Nice piece of history. I prefer the cleaner type A dial even though the type B was the upgrade and is more useful for its intended purpose.

·

Great looking piece. Good condition as well, all things considered. I love that type B dial. 👍

·

They are very rare because pilots were issues them shortly before taking off for a mission and had to return the watch after they landed.

·

Fantastic Durowe!

·

What a gift for all of us to see! Thank you!!!

"...and if you thought having it be commissioned and designed by Nazis was bad, just wait till you find out what Nazis did while wearing the watch!"

·

I can see why you like it. Amazing use case for an amazing watch style. I love an unapologetic tool watch like this, especially with provenance.

It's awesome that it was made to be worn over the jacket like that.

·

Wow! Beautiful piece! Congrats! 👏🏻

Indeed. It's one of those iffy bits of history where you can legitimately have something of interest, and worthy of preservation and discussion, but it has to be treated very carefully when talking to others about it. I'm always amused (bemused?) when YouTubers will talk about 'the German air force' as if that makes it all OK if no one says the word, Nazi.

·

A true vintage Laco. Something to keep and care

·

Wow the condition of the watch is amazing for it being over 80 years old! Super cool piece of history. Are you planning to wear it from time to time or keep it as a display piece ?

·

Cool piece of history 👏🏼

·

That is... Wow

"To the victor the spoils"! No one complains about NASA using Nazi rocketry to get to the moon. I once read a paramedic's review on a flieger and realised it was just as useful to someone sitting in the back of a bouncy ambulance monitoring someone's heart rate and applying medicine at correct intervals as it was to someone in a bouncy plane timing when to bomb a city. Most of us don't want the Nazis back but if something good can be made from their endeavours it's a small win against all the damage they did.

·

This god level 🆒 🥶, congratulations with your amazing watch😀

No they don't, but that's primarily because it was a peaceful endeavour that benefited the world, and secondarily the Nazi contingent was pretty small compared to NASA overall. So we're not comparing apples and apples there which is why 'no one complains', I would suggest. As for whether a flieger (or just a flieger-style?) watch helped a paramedic; great. But plenty of other watches used in the same scenario would have exactly the same function. Let's not try to make excuses for those guys. I think that's best, honestly.

I'm not excusing Nazis!!! I'm saying those who take some good from their efforts are justified in taking it.

I understand your point now. But my advice still remains the same for the OP - or anyone reading this, really - to just be careful when discussing this with other folks. You should always be honest, but there's a chequered history behind it all. Proceed with caution! :)

Very nice! Yeah. I think 55mm is big for anyone. At some point I will be a reasonable sized new one.

Absolutely, This was a instrument of war. That should never be forgotten by anyone!

·

Just wow. There is so much to love about that watch. First it's just cool. Second is what a piece of history you have, both available and WWII.

·

Amazing

I saw a ALS one in a shop window in Glasgow last year and if I’d had the money I would have got it. The size isn’t a problem when it was designed for a purpose. In fact it enhances the experience

Enjoy 👍
