MN straps coming unhooked?

Hello all,

Probably a dumb question but I've been looking at some Marine Nationale straps. I really like the ones from https://www.thewatchsteward.com/ but their buckle/metal hook thing is shorter than some others.

Is there any risk of the strap unhooking itself and the watch falling off? Or is it just fine?

I'm probably overthinking this.

Thank you!

·

The elastic ones I've used just get loose when the buckle comes out, rather than completely open up. I can't tell exactly how this one in the picture works because they have it in that weird orientation for the picture.

·

I tend to wear everything a bit loose, straps and bracelets alike. When I got my Erika's Original MN strap, I discovered it felt better to wear it a bit tighter than what I'm used to and let the inherent elasticity in the strap provide the wiggle room I like. When worn that way, I never feel as if the closure is about to come undone.

I don't have the particular brand you're asking about, so it may be different, but wanted to offer whatever experience I had with something similar.

I've been wearing a mn style strap regularly for a couple years, and it's never come undone accidentally. Even if the strap is slightly loose (so that the hook isn't under tension) I can shake my wrist around violently and even jiggle the hook with my fingers and it's not coming close to unhooking. Hope that helps!

·

EDIT : looking more closely I'm not sure it's the kind of MN strap I use, sorry

(I use this type of strap a lot and sometimes they unhook and get loose but a heavier watch should provide enough tension to keep the buckle hooked, plus it doesn't open completely so I usually have time to catch it )

I see, thank you! I didn't realize that the strap can't completely slip out of the watch and make it fall off. That is a relief. I can handle the possibility of the strap maybe coming loose once in a while. Thank you @Dallen and @momom01!

Which watch is this?

I have a Watch Steward MN type strap on my Seiko Tuna, which is a top heavy watch. I wear the strap fairly tight and I've never had an issue with it unbuckling.

Just from the product photo on the Watch Steward website. Looks to be a Seiko Turtle.

Ok, thank you for your input!

If you wear it loose, possible. Those Marine Nationale style straps are the only ones I wear tight.

I’ve got 3 watch steward straps and can only remember the buckle coming undone once. It’s a non issue.

Found the hook system a bit uncomfortable, so I recommend CWC mil-spec elastic NATO's cheap comfortable and the real deal.

Interesting, I hadn't heard of those! I'll check them out.

I have some “minimalist” MN straps by The Watch Steward and they would occasionally unhook indeed. Basically the hook is pretty shallow and if the strap becomes loose it will unhook. I’d never go swimming with them. The G-hook version they introduced recently doesn’t have the same issue though. I can totally recommend it!

I’ve never had such issues with Erika’s MN straps, though. Expensive, but very robust. But The Watch Steward makes great straps for the money.

Ok, thank you for your input! I don't swim anyway so that's not an issue for me. Regardless, I'll shop around and look at some other options too. Thanks!

The elastic used by the Watch Steward feels the most comfortable for me, when compared to Erika's and Nick Mankey.

That said, the Watch steward has the worst buckle out of the three. I have two very little kids and they come unhooked very often when I pick up/play with the kids. It's still my go-to for elastic straps (due to price and lead time). Just be aware that it can come unhooked

Get The Erika’s Original and you’ll be set. Never had it come undone!

·

I'm not saying that it is impossible for one to un-hook, but I own several watches that are fitted to Erika's Originals MN straps and it never happened to me.

·

Never had an issue with mine, and I've been buying from him since his start.

This is today's #wruw it's the newer g hook, but I have the regular ones too.

Hasn't slipped out once. And trust me, I'm active at work 😂.

The single pass variant can be a pain to fasten. Trick is to get it set, flip the watch over onto a pillow/mattress, press down, tighten.

MN strap is my daily wear & almost never unhooked accidentally.

And even when it did, it won't fall down from your wrist because it's like a bracelet, unless you got an MN strap with very large diameter or extremely small wrist size.

Yeah... but they're expensive and I'd like to try out the MN for the first time with something cheaper. I'd rather spend that much money on a watch 😉

Yes, they're probably worth it, but not for me, not right now. Thank you though!

Thank you for your input, tips, and photos! Yeah, I was thinking of getting the single pass option... oh well, I can live with it being hard to put on.

Ok, perfect! May I ask what brand your MN is from? Thank you!

Unfortunately my MN strap is an unbranded strap from local online store here in Indonesia, but it's probably made in China. I bought it for around USD 7, so waaaaaay cheaper than Erika's Original & Watch Steward 😁

Here's my wruw post wearing it https://www.watchcrunch.com/wynd.storm/posts/wruw-2024-01-12-2c86626e-ohljlbvb-294167

Update: I emailed The Watch Steward and he said he can make me a slip through strap with a G hook buckle! I will see how it goes and post some more updates. Lesson learned, email and ask. :)
