Hoping to do a better job of curating my mix in 2025 which means wearing similiar watches to see what stays. The Sumo keeps eclipsing other divers for me, especially other Seikos. It isn't objectively a better spec'd watch but the look and feel wears well on my wrist.
I think the Sumo line of Seiko watches isn't that popular because they aren't based on an historical vintage design like other Seiko divers are. The Turtle, SKX, 62MAS and Samurai all have a much richer, though sometimes overly romanticized, history.
The first gen Sumo only dates back to 2007 yet this 2nd gen SBDC031 keeps stealing wrist time from other better known divers in my collection.
I don't believe it wears as big as the nickname would suggest and I like the large legible bezel font. It has great wrist presence without being particularly costly to replace should something happen during one of my travel or adventure days.
We like what we like!
