What kind of watch buyer are you?

This may open up a can of worms, but it may be useful anyway! Watchcrunch is well known as a safe space to discuss our collective passion of watches, however I am starting to see more and more criticism of the affordable range of watches and thought it may be useful to see what you all actually think/buy. To be clear, when talking about 'affordable' watches I am only referring to genuine legal watches purchased from e.g. Amazon/AliExpress/eBay/etc.

Guess I'm a watch snob, voted A 🙄

E - Penny pincher (only buy second-hand) 😁

I either buy watches direct or through an AD. I may build a homage watch, but those will never enter commerce as complete watches.

I would further emphasize that I have not seen general criticism of affordable watches. Nobody here criticises Sea-Gull or Vostok, for example.

Also, I would be careful using the term "legal" in this context, as IP laws vary strongly by country.

I'm an everything goes kind of watch nerd. I appreciate the main brands and own several watches. But I also love building my own Frankenwatches from parts coming from all over the world to match the design I have in mind and put together my unique perfect watches for me and just me.

Anything goes for me, established brands or new micro brands I don't care, I just have to like the watch 👍

·

I like the moon and space so anything related to either I'll consider.

Don’t kid yourself. We’re all snobs after a fashion. Some of us are just honest about it.

·

I’m just starting out and decided to only get one watch from each brand to stop myself buying too quickly. Or at least for the first few years when I’m still learning about my own taste. So far found it to be quite fun, as for some brands like Omega and Rolex that could be a difficult choice to make and gets me thinking really hard before deciding

·

I personally love Seiko and grand Seiko history as well as JLC as my 2 favorite watch makers. I appreciate design and purpose more than brand and resale value. But I don't discriminate nor judge what's on your wrist. Enjoy whatever you do in this life 💖

E - Buy whichever is cheapest option and with least risk.

·

You need to add the elusive one brand collector. Only buy from one brand

What I love about stores like Walmart and Ross is affordability aside, you can get a watch from there without having to be on a waitlist for God knows how long. Nothing against ADs but I personally wouldn’t be too happy if I had to wait for months or even years to get a particular watch from a AD. There’s a reason why I’m a Casio and Timex fan.

I guess by “legal” , you mean not counterfeit?

That gets expensive if its Rolex. 😂

·

I have Casios but mainly like to focus on independence and microbrands. I feel if you do enough research you really do get so much watch for your money, and tend to be able to find styles that stand out from the norm

I want to be you when I grow up 👌😂👍

Be careful not to confuse open, honest, experienced opinions with "snobbery." They are not the same.

In any hobby, those who have been around for a while tend to have opinions formed from hard knocks and monies spent. Along comes an eager, new hobbiest convinced they have all the knowledge they need. The elder hobbiest speaks his mind and is labeled a "snob," when in fact, they are only trying to save the young hobbiest time and money.

I see plenty of perfect watches in your gallery already. You don't need to build any. 😉

I voted C because one man’s ceiling is another man’s floor, haha. Just the other day, I was checking out an Oris PD model with a gorgeous brown dial, some other customer was investigating something gold, really nice over 150k cad.

I guess I’m a purist.

·

I adhere to the helter skelter method of buying.

Are the controversial affordable you’re referring to like homage (or maybe “clomage”) pieces like many Pagini models and even Steinert watches (e.g. GMT-lookalikes)?

If so then I can’t say I’m a fan of those models.

But I dont have issues with Pagini pieces that are semi-original. So its not so much that they’re affordable (e.g. less expensive) or that it’s from a brand that releases these pieces or that it’s sold direct online.

But hey, to each their own 🤷‍♂️

·

My likes and dislikes are varied. I refuse to give patronage to any company that makes you grovel for their product. I do like brand history and heritage but it isn't everything. There was a time when Rolex was a young watch company. Timex is older than they are. I am more than happy with supporting particular independents and microbrands. I am more pleased wearing a watch that is of good quality that is lesser known. I like watches of which non-watch people have zero knowledge.
