I have never tried it, but the previous 20mm version may be compatible without making any adjustments to the end link.

Didn't the 4 digit Subs have hollow end links? If so you could pick up any number of hollow end link bracelets from Amazon / ebay / strap code. They would almost certainly be better quality than period accurate ones.
Personally though, I would go for a NATO. Will give it an appropriately tooly aesthetic and I think it's a flex to wear vintage on nylon.

Trust me, I'm a bracelet guy. But the lack of adjustmenton the old style bracelet makes me look for another option that will allow some slack for the summer heat.

I threw a easy link on my 16570, it's plenty capable.

Yeah I did some Google image searches. It's got potential. Are these full rubber material then? Or is there a veneer on the exterior?

No veneer on the good ones. I'd also stay away from silicone and make sure you get an FKM rubber one. They're comfortable (well vented and not sticky), very durable and have a tasteful, very minor sheen to them - not a cheap, overly shiny look.
I buy mine from Strapcode but there are other makers as well.
EDIT: the FKM ones are also pliable, not stiff like cheaper, more plastic-y materials.
I think it looks best on the bracelet or NATO next. But if I were to go with a leather strap, I'd get something like this grey one:
