My AQ-230A is one of the reasons why I think that Casio is a great brand.
You are probably familiar with this trick: Step 1:Select an old discontinued model from your vintage catalog. Step 2: Launch a new model that looks roughly similar. Step 3: Tell everybody how deeply rooted in the history of the brand this new model is, which is why you had to price it an order or magnitude higher than the original. Step 4: Profit, and occasionally relaunch it again as a special limited edition.
Does it sounds familiar? It should but Casio didn't use that one with the AQ-230A. Oh I'm sure that they have a bag of dirty tricks of their own, but in the case of the AQ-230A they launched an almost perfect re-creation of a generic ana-digi wristwatch from the 80's and it can purchased for the price of a sandwich (OK, maybe a couple of them or an extraordinary large one).
TBH, it's an almost too perfect recreation while simultaneously it's not really. My own retro-lust doesn't carry to insist to keep the small digital display free of any illumination just like it did in the 80's, and I would not mind a metal case and a glass crystal, also just like it was in the 80's.
The AQ-230A offers a great value for one like me who like retro stuff, but it's plasticky and disposable nature might not appeal to anyone else.
It's still a better value than other plasticky and equally disposable watches that are currently offered for sale at a lot more money, and even if you don't agree with me on this point then you'll have to concede that it's a lot easier to buy an AQ-230A than one of the other more hyped plastic watches.
I remember seeing a similar Ana-digi in high school made by Citizen. Didn't know Casio also made their own version then. I was used to seeing full digital Casio watches then. I even owned a Casio calculator watch during those time.
I love this look, but I always with these type watches had metal cases.

All the big Japanese manufacturers had their ana-digi, I think that I had one from Seiko and another probably made by Casio or Citizen.
Can this be considered as a tank? I’m looking for one and I like this but whether this style can be a tank or not, I’m not sure…
