My trusty Excel sheet says 40,8mm on average (median = 40,6mm). Range: from 28,3mm (vintage) to 47,3mm. 18cm wrist (sorry, I don't do freedom units)
Thanks everyone for your advice. On balance, I think I'll keep it - tastes do change, and it really is a very special watch. OTOH, everyone has his price, and I might possibly agree if someone wanted to swap this watch for a Daytona. Reluctantly.
