The earliest Wind Rose appeared on navigation charts used in the 13th century by Italian and Spanish sailors.
Before the development of the compass rose, a wind rose was included on maps to let the reader know which direction the 8 major winds blew within the plan view.
The Wind Rose is presented in a circular format with the length of each spoke around the circle related to the frequency of the wind blowing from a particular direction over specified period. Each concentric circle represents a different frequency emanating from zero at the center to increasing frequencies at the outer circles.
This technology dates back to Athens 50 BC in the form of the Tower of Winds which was an octagonal tower with eight reliefs of the winds near the top. It was designed by Andronicus of Cyrrhus with the idea of planning city road orientation to maximize benefits and minimize harms from various winds.
