Description

Lip is a french watch company that was created in 1908 by Emmanuel Lipmann who hailed from a family of Alsatian watchmakers.

Type 10 aviation wristwatches were produced since 1935 and was used by Jean Mermoz, an aviator and a french national hero.

Croix Du Sud "The Southern Cross" was the name of a Latecoere 300 plane used by Jean Mermoz in his South American expeditions. Sadly on 7 December 1936 the plane disappeared at sea.

A 1941 investigation that took place in Uruguay concluded that the disappearance of Croix Du Sud was a result of sabotage by the Nazi Fifth Column to eliminate air mails that contained bidding proposals for the Rincon del Bonete hydroelectric plant.

In memory of Jean Mermoz, Lip reissued Type 10 Croix Du Sud in 2001.

An interesting bit of history... In 1904 Ernest Lipmann (son of Emmanuel Lipmann) who was a technician at the watch company approached Pierre and Marie Curie to find a substance to help read wristwatches in the dark. The first phosphorescent dials were born.
