Special occasion or anytime is a good time?

The first pieces of my collection were not associated with any occasion, I bought them simply because I wanted them.

I want to ask you, WatchCrunchers, when buying a watch, do you prefer to wait for a special occasion like a birthday, wedding anniversary, graduation etc.. so it holds meaningful memories?

Or do you buy a watch whenever you want without waiting for a special event?

Buy whenever you are in a position to do so.

I buy when a good occasion presents itself, be it a special discount or enough funds in the "fun money" account. No impulsive purchase tho, I usually have a list of watches I've been considering for months.

I go with the mix! I enjoys browsing #ebay for vintage goodies. Even if they aren't working I try to fix them up, so I don't spend too much on those.

I also enjoy #casio #digital classics. Easy and fast through #amazon.

My special occasions are my bigger purchases. I bought my #weddingwatch recently... We are planning on Spring of '26! 🥰🎊⌚

Every day we are alive is a blessing worth celebrating with a new watch.

When it comes to watches, EVERYDAY IS ME BIRTHDAY 🥳

🤫 You can have it both ways, all you gots to do is buy the watch, keep quiet and then associate it to an important event later on. Repeat it enough times in your stories and it will become “that anniversary/birthday/promotion/graduation” watch.

I bought my 40th Anniv G-Shock last year 2023, I have since rebranded it to become my “moving to a new country” watch - more than a year after I had moved 😅 but no one reads the fine print anyway 🤪.

I think pulling the trigger on a special occasion makes the watch more special and memorable but if its a deal on a watch or if its limited or something then dont wait much if you really want that watch.

·

I wait for personal/professional milestones for the most part. This allows me to save and/or use part of $ associated with those milestones (most of my target watches are between 5 and 10k). It helps me keep things sane and logical, gives me time to really research, and helps ensure a collection that is mostly for keeps and is highly meaningful.

Anytime when there is a good offer (sale, discount, etc).

I've never been a fan of tying watches, or anything really, into special occasions. Why? Because it imbues these items with a power they don't deserve because, at the end of the day, they are inanimate objects. When someone has "a wedding watch" or "a watch I wore when my son was born" or whatever the thing is, suddenly that watch becomes VERY SPECIAL and if it gets scratched, or broken, or stolen, or lost, it's suddenly a VERY BAD situation. And I just find that ridiculous. I think it's adding stress to your life, via something - a watch - that should never ever be stressful. But people try to imbue these objects with such importance, they become near-sacred objects and... yeah... I have no time for it.

The watch that started this hobby for me was a special occasion gift. After a few years of just buying whatever, whenever I've returned to mainly linking big purchases to special occasions.

·

For me, a special occasion is a day that ends with the letter "y."

The watches I hunt aren't exactly available. When and if they come on market, it depends if I have the financial ability at the same moment to buy... does that count as a special occasion? 😂

·

There is always an occasion: a completed work project, a birthday, wedding anniversary, Christmas ... 😂😂

·

If money is not an issue then make it rain. YOLO!

·

I tend to buy less expensive watches whenever the mood strikes, but for anniversaries or major birthdays. Go for “Bigger “ watches.

·

If you're building a collection, you have to be ready when the right watch surfaces.

In my hunting days, once I clearly defined the objective, I saved for a year and if I felt that I deserved it for having done things well, I gave it to myself. Otherwise, he would wait an equivalent period and ask me the same question again.

Maybe it's because I'm fairly early in my collection, about 2 1/2yrs. I find myself pulling the trigger if the price is right, and my money's right. At the moment I am saving money for a grail piece, and when I reach that goal it will be a special occasion. I bought a watch for myself for Christmas and ended up selling it. I think these memorable connections to a piece come unintentionally. But if you have a special achievement you want to commemorate, that's also a good time to buy a milestone piece, just be sure the watch is exactly what you want, it would suck to waste it on a disappointment.
