Cyclops Lens still needed?

Given that most watches now feature anti-reflective sapphire glass, do we still need a cyclops lens to magnify the date, or has it become unaesthetic?

Not sure if I end up the minority here, but I don’t like cyclops lenses. I find it quite jarring.

·

Not sure it's tied to AR coating. The date info is simply quite small on many watches, so some brands put a magnifier on it. Many are just hard to read, size-wise. I'd rather the date is just omitted though as I find a cyclops pretty hideous.

Depends, if date tiny magnifier helps. But I think it most definitely has become a design element and more an aesthetic choice.

·

Used to hate them but as the eyes start to fade I’m thinking it’s actually a brilliant invention 😂

·

Cyclops lenses on a crystal are a deal breaker. Nope.

·

Hate date complications, so a firm no from me 🤣

·

If Mühle does it I’m ok with it otherwise I think they are hideous 😅

·

No thanks. Now that I have bifocals I’m cool. 😂

·

I like them on Rolex.

·

The TAG Heuer Aquaracer has a pretty novel date cyclops. It’s recessed into the crystal, so no dust ever comes into contact with it. Makes the cyclops both useful and not an eyesore.

·

Ask me this in 10 more years 😂

·

The Cyclops looks good on a Rolex, but hideous on any other brand.

·

It depends! I like underside/embedded date magnifiers, like my Chopard Mille Miglia GT XL, where the cyclops is part of the crystal or below the crystal and doesn’t protrude above.

But the Rolex-style, where the cyclops is glued on top? Seems kinda ugly to me. The fact that Rolex still does this decades after others have switched to other ways of magnifying the date is baffling to me. It’s not that iconic of a design trait …

·

Done well they work but otherwise just distort the hands twice a day

Cyclops lens are the scourge of watch design for me and are a big no!

·

I now need my bifocals or (if wearing contact lenses) reading glasses to read the date, but I'd still rather not have a cyclops. Always hated them and thought they ruined the look of a watch.

·

The older I get the more I appreciate it

·

how to remove them?

·

Time will tell, honestly; or go digi or big date.

how to remove them?

The magnifier should pop off by applying the flame of a torch lighter. Of course, always safer to remove the crystal first.

AR coating ain’t the reason I like cyclops. My eyesight is the reason 🤓
